The Shadow by Petra Pierre - Robertson

Image
Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow...  (Psalm 63:7) Your shadow hovers over me, reminding me you are very close I remember observing the image of a cloud blocking the sun. The result was a dark shadow.   It reminded me of quote I read in one of my morning devotionals   “ When things are darkest Lord, it is the darkness of your shadow hovering over me , reminding me You are very close… ” (‘Songs From Heaven and Earth’ Marlee Alex, p10) Shadows exist because of the presence of the sun This imagery is encapsulated nicely in Psalm 91:1 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”   Of course that is only possible when one considers that the s hadow exists because of the presence of the sun.  Therefore, when  clouds of afflictions, burdens, persecutions, failed relationships and varied uncertainties, form, gather and hover, remember, the ensuing shadow represents the presence o...

“Who do you say I am?” by Petra Pierre - Robertson

Matthew 16:15 “But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Who do you say I am? Random: That is not a nice person    Do you know that person?   Have you met that person before now? Random: No Then how can you say that Random: I get it from a good source Bush for drinking (and perhaps hiding too) The local saying 'doh drink bush tea (to sweat) for other people fever' can be applied here.   In the above encounter, a person harbours ill will, and has negative feelings for someone she/he doesn’t even know, largely because of something someone else has intimated.   Don't drink tea to sweat for another's fever My mind runs back to Christ.   So many negatives were bandied about him; he was a glutton; a  terrible trait alluding to a person who is greedy, had a voracious appetite.   He was also accused of drinking a lot to the point where he was called a winebibber; a term used to describe a habitual drinker of alcohol.   To ...

Consider The Birds: Part 1 ‘They Neither Sow, Reap nor Store Away. Yet…’ by Petra Pierre - Robertson

Image
Look at the birds... Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  (Matthew 6:26) In my blog “The Compost and the Ackee Tree”, dated November 22, 2020, I promised to return to the birds in another blog. I know this is a little late in coming but notwithstanding my apparent lateness, God is an on-time God, so here it is.   For the next three weeks, I will share three lessons from the birds in this three-part blog.  This week’s lesson, ‘They neither sow, reap nor store away.  Yet…’ . Put another way, they have no job, no earnings and no assets. Yet…’ Fruit aesthetically laid out on the counter My fruits for the week were aesthetically set out on the counter .  Covid-19 had shut the world down.  A number of persons were either temporarily laid off, or had received slashes in their salaries.  All who were employed, with the exception of those deemed ‘essential services’...

"One size fits all"? (OR All sizes fit one?) by Petra Pierre - Robertson

Image
"One size fits all"? The phrase ‘one size fits all’ is normally used to refer to an item, product, decision,  style, procedure, solution and the like, that fits, is suitable for or can be applied or used in all instances, or for all circumstances.   It represents standardization, uniformity and consistency.    But is this true?  Does one size really fit all? Does one size really fit all?   All sizes fit one In my interactions with a WhatAapp group consisting of Advent Fellowship Alumni from the UWI, St Augustine, an alternative struck me -   All sizes fit one.   So, requested by Desmond, pushed by Barry and inspired by the chatty Advent Fellowship Alumni group members, this blog is dedicated to Advent Fellowship Alumni of The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus. All sizes! “All sizes…” They come in all shapes and sizes: Different unique perspectives Different   unique world views Different unique qualifi...

2020 Vision for 2021: Anoint Your Eyes by Petra Pierre - Robertson

Image
Revelation 3:18 "...and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see..." Things are not always as they seem At my scheduled eye examination, due every two years or so, although everything appeared to be fine, my responses to the various tests were inconsistent. So the optometrist dropped dye in my eye. The dye would show  what was happening in the background. It strips away and reveals.    Dye facilitated revelation For 2021, we need to apply 2020 vision from lessons learnt. 2020 was like an eye exam; Covid-19 the dye which facilitated so much revelation.   As we complete the lesson of 2020, Here is a post-assessment. There are some things you will see clearly Clearly seen On my regular walk I came upon this sight, clearly visible because it was out of place.   It had drifted out of its habitat, whether accidentally or deliberately, and wandered across mine. I did not crush it even though I had the obvious advantage. Instead I guided it back t...

Snakes and Ladders by Petra Pierre - Robertson

Image
Snakes and Ladders 97!   Just one more move IF I get a 3! Lord, give me a 3 a nd I'm done!    I will even take 2!   Just get me past that snake! Please do not give me 1!   Snakes Why was the snake positioned on the last leg of the journey, just before the finish line?   The journey had begun so nicely.   You were up the ladder from your first move!  Then, as soon as you started to make good progress,  the snakes just appear, all over the board, to mess things up. You had been through so much; you battled and survived; accomplished, despite the odds, in 2020.   Now, when home is just in sight, up looms a snake! Start with a ladder     End with  a snake Snakes symbolise enemies. It was a serpent (later called a snake) who beguiled Eve .   As a result of his fatal trickery, paradise was lost, toil, hardship and death stepped in and enmity was placed between humankind and snakes.     And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; H...
