Lessons from the sea Part 2: Beautiful from a distance

For now we see through a glass, darkly... (1 Corinthians12:12 )

The sea raged

The sea was rough. It was loud. The waves were roaring and soaring as they charged furiously into the shore, raking the sand like an excavator.
Yet
It was beautiful
To look at
From a distance

Have you ever had the shocking realization that things you thought were beautiful were not really that beautiful?
  • They caused you pain
  • They were not good to be near
  • They revealed darker sides the closer they came
  • They consumed you in their clutches and destroyed you
Some things were just better admired from a distance

Admire from a distance

Unfortunately, in the face of consuming beauty and treasured expectations, signs are sometimes ignored or overlooked. You hear the sound, you feel the blast, you taste the salt, you feel the ground being pulled from under your feet yet you remain thinking, I am secure where I am, I am only admiring it.   Dear reader, please note that all it takes is one consuming wave to change your shore into a swirling riptide with you as its prey.

Sea Blast

I looked at the light. It lit up the area. It was scenic. Around it was a beautiful circular mist. I rubbed my eyes. The mist was still there. What was it? "Sea Blast", someone uttered.  The haze actually made things look mystical and magical. It  shrouded the real; vision clouded by perception and expectation.   The beautiful sea blast also has a devastating effect on metallic surfaces and electrical and plumbing steel-based fixtures overtime.

Sea blast has a devastating effect on metallic surfaces

"This rock on which I sit was once joined to that rock over there"
I stood looking at the rock beaten by the timeless turning of the tide. A strong sturdy rock? How did the separation happen?
"And next time we return even this rock on which we stand would be gone."

The sea caused this split...

The sea split a sturdy surface? How could something so beautiful be so destructive? Gradualism. Gradually it was eroded. Moment by moment, minute by minute, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year, one piece at a time.  Beaten down. Subtly. Unnoticed. The break wasn't sudden. It was happening overtime.

Erosion caused breakage and separation

Keep your heart with all diligence (Proverbs 4:23). Be alert (1Peter 5:8).  Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:18). Walk circumspectly (Ephesians 5:15).  Pray for the spirit of discernment for things are not always as they seem.
