Walking on the Wings of the Wind by Petra Pierre - Robertson

He makes the clouds his chariot

and walks upon the wings of the wind. (Psalm 104:3)

I remember that day clearly. I was a teen. I stood by the traffic light waiting for the all clear to cross the busy road when a strong breeze blew. It almost pushed me onto the road in the path of the speeding cars. I was no more than 80lbs at that time  (I never crossed 80lbs during my teen years; but that is the subject of another blog). I struggled to remain unmovable against the gust, but I couldn't. In desperation I grabbed the pole supporting the traffic light, to keep from being pushed onto the road by the strong wind.  I struggled against just a small gust, yet the Psalmist asserts that God walks on the wings of the wind (Psalm 104:3); and I am certain he was alluding to the strongest wind one can possibly imagine! What a powerful analogy to depict the authority of our God.

The disciples also witnessed the showdown between the wind and Jesus. It left them in awe.  "Even the winds obey him....” They uttered. This was after they chastised him for sleeping through a ferocious storm against which they pooled their combined strength and battled, but to no avail. No doubt water was filling the boat which was being flung in all directions on the rough sea, even as it was in danger of sinking.  It was also night, so doubtless the darkness was fathomless!   With wide eyes, shouts and abject fear, they turned to where Jesus lay sleeping peacefully in the midst of the storm and shook him awake. "And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4: 39). Overwhelmed with fear the disciples turned to one another, speaking among themselves asking each other what kind of man is this that not just the wind, but even the sea obey him?  (Mark 4:41)

In the midst of this pandemic it is as though we are 80lbs. The statistics swirl around us. The rate of infection threatens to blow us onto a path of devastation. In desperation we grab restrictions hoping they will cause the onslaught  to stop, and allow us to cross over to the other side. Additionally, God appears to be sleeping in the midst of the pandemic. Rest assured, however, that with just one word he will rise and rebuke the wind and the waves.  He will walk not just on the wings of wind, but also on water.  Once this man - God - is in our boat with us, as the storm rages around us, we have nothing to fear. May we find peace in the midst of this pandemic until such time as he says "Stop! Enough is enough!"

"You of little faith! Why are you so afraid?" (Matthew 8:26)
